Morgan secures important points at silverstone
WIX Racings Adam Morgan managed to turn around a tricky weekend during round 9 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship held at Silverstone in Northamptonshire, with 2 outstanding drives in the days 2nd and 3rdraces.
The Ribchester Rocket was hampered with straight line speed issues in the Ciceley Motorsport Mercedes-Benz A-Class during Free Practice 1 and 2 and the team struggled to improve this in qualifying. Adam and the team were able to overcome some of these issues and he eventually qualified in 13th. Adam “That was tight, very tight, the top 23 cars have qualified within the same second, I am only 0.47 of a second off pole. There are only really three corners on the Silverstone national circuit and we are losing a 10th of a second on each of the 3 straights that connect them. The WIX Racing Mercedes-Benz A-Class is short and stocky brilliant for tight twisty tracks but probably not as aerodynamic as the longer bodied cars on the Silverstone straights. We are confident we can still do alright from here, we have a good race set up, so let’s see what race day brings”
A beautiful autumn day welcomed the massive crowd to races 25, 26 and 27 of the British Touring Car Championship and for the 9thconsecutive race weekend this year the track would remain dry. Adam made a fantastic start from row 7 and soon began carving his way through the field, unfortunately, early contact with another competitor caused damage to the Mercedes air intake and Adam began to lose power. Adam again dug deep and his determined efforts saw him battle his way to a 12th place finish, unfortunately the damage had only enabled him to set the 20th fastest time for race 2, yet again Adam was going to have to fight through the field to get into the points.
The Ciceley Motorsport mechanics had substantial engine repairs and bodywork to complete in the 2 hours between races and as usual an immaculate WIX Racing Mercedes-Benz A-Class was wheeled out of the garage in readiness for round 26. The teams engineer Paul Ridgway had studied the available data and implemented more set up changes to the car. Adam on the soft option Dunlop tyres again immediately began to make up positions and on his way to an 11th place finish he also set the fastest lap of the race. An enthused Adam “The car was mega, the team have been meticulous in their preparation and Paul’s set up changes were absolutely spot on, unfortunately after passing 9 cars the leading bunch had pulled away too far for me to catch them and get into the top 10, the car was much faster without the success ballast and to get the fastest lap is further testament to our amazing team”
The Ribchester Rocket rolled onto the line for race 3 confident of a decent top 10 finish. Adam was involved in an exciting race long battle with the factory Hondas of Championship leader Gordon Shedden and Matt Neil and the Ford of Mat Jackson, eventually finishing in 8th place only 4 seconds behind the race winner and reigning Champion Colin Turkington. Adam “I really enjoyed that race full of overtaking and defending, it was difficult to make up places because we were all running at the same pace. I have just been told that no matter what happens I am at least 3rd in the Independents Championship, only 40 points behind leader Colin Turkington and 20 points behind Jason Plato in second. I am going to have a proper go at the Brands Hatch championship finale in 2 weeks, I am proper fired up”
Norman Burgess Commercial and Marketing Manager “The ‘Morganator’ has done it again another brilliant weekend on track. Adam’s intelligent and consistent driving style coupled with the teams competitive and reliable Mercedes-Benz A-Class has made this a fantastic year so far, which can now mathematically only improve. There have been massive gains made each race weekend, the job satisfaction of every single member of the WIX Racing team experience through their individual efforts in this project are immense”
Norman “WIX Filters committed to extend their Title Sponsor agreement with us a few weeks ago and it became public knowledge last week. WIX Filters faith in the team has given us an added confidence boost. This weekend, the hospitality team hosted over 140 VIP guests their customer care and our ‘will do’ not ‘could do attitude’ again ensured that every single VIP received the best money can’t buy experience in the entire paddock. The food provided by the team’s chef Dave Hayball was, as always exceptional from the bacon and sausage rolls the VIP’s received on arrival to the 3 course Sunday lunch and afternoon teas later in the day. Dave is an outstanding chef and we are very grateful for his contribution to the team. It has been another outstanding weekend”.
